Fibroids FAQ
What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are benign tumors that resemble a super ball in consistency and can range from pea-sized to larger than a grapefruit. Uterine fibroids affect up to 50% of women.
What are the symptoms of uterine fibroids?
Many women with uterine fibroids may not have symptoms or even know that they have fibroids. Fibroids can also cause a number of symptoms depending on their size, location within the uterus, and proximity to adjacent pelvic organs. Symptoms of uterine fibroids include:
abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB)
heavy periods (menorrhagia)
breakthrough bleeding or spotting
painful menstrual cycles (dysmenorrhea)
symptomatic anemia (which can lead to fatigue or require blood transfusions)
chronic pelvic pain and pressure
What causes uterine fibroids?
We do not know exactly why women develop these tumors. Genetic abnormalities, alterations in growth factors (proteins that direct the rate and extent of cell proliferation), abnormalities in the vascular system, and tissue response to injury have all been suggested to play a role in the development of fibroids.
What treatment options are available for fibroids?
In some cases, fibroid symptoms can be treated with medical options such as birth control pills, leuprolide injections that can cause a temporary “medical menopause,” or a progesterone intrauterine device (IUD). If medical management is unsuccessful or contraindicated, surgery to remove uterine fibroids (myomectomy) or to remove the entire uterus (hysterectomy) can have a profound positive effect on women’s health and quality of life.
Why seek out a specialist for fibroid surgery?
Large fibroids can distort the normal pelvic anatomy, increasing the risk of inadvertent surgical injury to the ureters or nearby blood vessels as well as the overall surgical difficulty. The risk of significant intra-operative blood loss increases especially with larger fibroids. As a high-volume surgeon with decades of experience performing complicated pelvic surgeries, Dr. Margolis has demonstrated excellence in performing safe and efficient surgeries on enlarged fibroids.
